This course will provide an introduction to the study of language in our everyday lives, including face-to-face conversations, electronic exchanges and media. It will address questions such as how we figure out what others really mean, how we mark power relations in language, linguistic humour, and language as action. Students will gain an understanding of the systems and patterns that govern our linguistic interactions, with practical applications across many spheres.
