3 units
Biopharmaceutical Science
Faculty of Science
A study of the major biosynthetic pathways used by plants, bacteria and animals to synthesize the major families of secondary metabolites including fatty acids, phenolics, lignans, terpenes, steroids and alkaloids. The traditional use of certain natural products themselves as medicines and their value as lead compound for new drugs will be discussed. The synthesis of the natural products themselves or that of useful derivatives will also be studied.
