API 6327 Political Persuasion

Faculty of Social Sciences
Much of politics is about getting people to do what you want them to do. Persuasion, the art of appropriately and effectively using timing, argument, emotional appeal, and credibility to bring others around to a certain perspective, is a cost-effective means. While the art of persuasion is as old as politics, cognitive science has, more recently, illuminated when and how these arts are effective. This interdisciplinary course engages not only these arts and science, but foundational ethical questions around the tense relationship of persuasion to democratic governance and equality. In addition to learning about persuasion, students will practice and develop their own persuasive skills.
