Multidisciplinary examination of the development and transformation of social policies in Canada and other OECD countries. Issues covered include justice, poverty and inequality as well as government responses influencing them such as social assistance, social insurance (e.g. unemployment, sickness and health), child care and family policy (e.g. child benefits and parental leave) and pensions (e.g. old age and disability). The course examines the political, economic, and demographic factors that have shaped social policies and methods for analyzing them.
